9 Ways to Prepare for a Scientific Conference

We love attending scientific conferences! In a very short amount of time, we’re able to network with colleagues, learn about new and upcoming research, and gain insights into best practices within the forensic field. If you’re attending your first conference this year or you tend to get nervous when attending large events, keep reading for the best ways we like to prepare for a scientific conference.

1. Set your intentions.

It’s important to identify what you hope to achieve by attending this event. Are you looking to learn about new techniques, equipment, or software? Do you want to collaborate with other agencies? Looking for a new job? Once you’ve identified your goals, you can tailor your conference experience to meet your needs.

2. Prep your schedule.

Review the conference program catalog, website, or app and identify the sessions and workshops that align with your goals. Be sure to leave plenty of time for networking and exploring the exhibit hall.

3. Download the conference app.

Most conferences offer a mobile app that can be downloaded to your digital device. This app can be a valuable tool for keeping track of your schedule, connecting with other attendees, and accessing conference materials. Be sure to download the app before the event and familiarize yourself with its features.

4. Network, network, network!

Your peers are more valuable than any nugget of info you absorb. Attend social events and participate in discussions during meals, short breaks, and exhibitor halls. Don’t waste time by isolating yourself or retreating to your hotel room!

5. Hand out your card.

When handing out business cards, be sure to include your name, title, and contact information. You may also want to include a brief description of your areas of expertise. Consider using a digital business card app to make it easy for attendees to save your contact information (psssttt… we love to use Canva for this!).

6. Bring copies of your resume/CV.

Even if you’re not actively seeking new career opportunities, bring copies of your curriculum vitae or resume anyway! You never know who you might meet at a conference, and having your resume on hand can be a valuable opportunity to make a good impression. Need to refresh your CV? Not to worry – we can help you develop your CV through our step-by-step guide.

7. Be ready to write notes.

During presentations and workshops, be sure to take detailed notes. You may also want to bring a notebook to jot down ideas and insights throughout the conference. Review your notes at the end of each day to reinforce your learning and identify key takeaways.

8. Pack snacks and water.

There’s nothing worse than sitting through a lecture when you’re hungry or thirsty. Consider packing healthy snacks like nuts, fruit, and granola bars to help keep you energized. Avoid sugary snacks and caffeine, which can cause energy crashes and disrupt your concentration.

9. Trade your swag.

Does your agency have cool freebies? Do you collect challenge coins or patches? Bring them with you! Other people love that sort of thing and it makes for an easy icebreaker to start conversations.

In conclusion, attending a scientific conference is a valuable investment for forensic professionals. We hope these tips help you prepare for a scientific conference in the future. By setting your intended gains, planning your schedule, downloading the conference app on your digital devices, networking, handing out business cards, preparing a curriculum vitae or resume, being prepared to write notes, and bringing the best types of snacks, you’ll be well-prepared to make the most of your conference experience.
