National Forensic Science Week Ideas: How Agencies Can Recognize Forensic Professionals

Every year, National Forensic Science Week provides an opportunity to recognize the forensic professionals who work behind the scenes to support investigations, serve their communities, and contribute to the pursuit of justice.

Yet despite the importance of this week, many forensic units find themselves asking the same question:

“What should we do for National Forensic Science Week this year?”

For many agencies, National Forensic Science Week arrives with the best intentions but very little planning. Someone remembers it’s coming up, a few ideas get tossed around, schedules get busy, and before anyone knows it, the week has passed with little or no recognition for the people who make forensic operations possible.

The good news is that celebrating National Forensic Science Week doesn’t have to be complicated, expensive, or time-consuming.

In this blog post, we’ll explore what National Forensic Science Week is, why it matters, how agencies typically celebrate, and how you can start creating a plan that works for your forensic team.

What Is National Forensic Science Week?

National Forensic Science Week (NFSW) is an annual observance dedicated to recognizing the contributions of forensic science professionals and increasing awareness of the important role forensic science plays in the criminal justice system.

Forensic professionals often work behind the scenes. While detectives, officers, attorneys, and other public-facing roles may receive greater visibility, forensic personnel are frequently the people processing crime scenes, analyzing evidence in the laboratory, examining digital devices, comparing fingerprints, conducting toxicology testing, or interpreting bloodstain patterns. Their work helps provide objective scientific information that supports investigations and court proceedings.

Despite the critical role forensic professionals play, many members of the public (and even some within law enforcement agencies!) have only a limited understanding of what forensic professionals do on a daily basis.

National Forensic Science Week provides an opportunity to change that.

The Purpose of National Forensic Science Week

For some agencies, National Forensic Science Week serves as an opportunity to recognize employees internally. For others, it becomes a chance to educate the public about forensic careers, laboratory operations, crime scene investigations, or emerging technologies.

Neither approach is wrong! In fact, some of the most successful National Forensic Science Week celebrations include both employee recognition and community outreach.

The purpose of National Forensic Science Week is ultimately to increase awareness of forensic science and recognize the professionals who make this work possible.

The key is being intentional about what you hope to accomplish.

Recognition vs. Outreach: Understanding the Difference

One reason agencies sometimes struggle with National Forensic Science Week is that there can be confusion about the purpose of the week itself.

Some agencies primarily use National Forensic Science Week as an opportunity to educate the public about forensic science. This often involves asking members of the forensic unit to step away from their normal responsibilities to participate in school presentations, community demonstrations, tours, and other outreach activities throughout the week.

Of course those activities certainly have value. However, many forensic professionals view National Forensic Science Week as something else entirely. They see it as an opportunity to recognize the people doing the work.

Think about how we approach National Police Week or National Nurses Week or Teacher Appreciation Week. While those observances may include public-facing activities, they are also centered around appreciation, recognition, and support for the professionals themselves.

We should approach National Forensic Science Week in a similar way.

Why National Forensic Science Week Can Be Difficult to Plan

If you’ve ever found yourself scrambling for ideas a few weeks before National Forensic Science Week, you’re certainly not the first.

There are several reasons why planning can be challenging.

Challenge #1: It Sneaks Up on Everyone

Many agencies don’t intentionally ignore National Forensic Science Week – they simply lose track of it!

Unlike major holidays and agency events that are built into annual calendars months in advance, National Forensic Science Week often doesn’t have a designated planner or owner. As a result, it can easily fall off the radar.

By the time someone remembers it’s coming up, there may not be enough time to coordinate activities, involve leadership, or work with communications staff.

Challenge #2: Staffing and Coverage Requirements

Forensic work doesn’t stop because there’s a celebration planned… crime scenes still need to be processed, evidence still needs to be analyzed, court deadlines still exist.

Plus many forensic units operate with limited staffing and little flexibility. That’s why forensic teams may look at National Forensic Science Week celebrations and immediately think:

“That sounds great, but we could never pull that off.”

And honestly, sometimes they’re right. Not every agency can send an entire forensic team off-site for an afternoon activity, and not every laboratory can shut down operations for a group event.

The good news is that showing recognition and appreciation doesn’t have to require shutting down operations or sending everyone on an all-day outing. In many cases, small, thoughtful efforts have the greatest impact.

Challenge #3: Budget Constraints

Not every agency has funds available for elaborate celebrations. And that’s okay!!

One of the biggest misconceptions about employee recognition is that it requires a large budget. In reality, some of the most meaningful forms of recognition cost very little.

Recognition is less about how much money is spent and more about whether people feel seen, appreciated, and acknowledged.

Challenge #4: Leadership May Not Be Familiar with National Forensic Science Week

Another common challenge is awareness.

Many chiefs, sheriffs, directors, and command staff members simply aren’t familiar with National Forensic Science Week. Others may have heard of it but misunderstand its purpose.

Rather than assuming leadership isn’t interested, consider that they may simply need more information about what National Forensic Science Week is and why it matters to your team.

Often, a simple conversation is enough to open the door for support and participation.

How Agencies Typically Celebrate National Forensic Science Week

One of the best things about National Forensic Science Week is that there isn’t a single “correct” way to celebrate.

Every agency has different staffing levels, budgets, leadership support, and organizational cultures. So what works for one agency may not work for another.

The goal isn’t to copy someone else’s celebration exactly, the goal is to find an approach that fits your team.

🏆 Employee Recognition

Many agencies use National Forensic Science Week as an opportunity to recognize individual forensic professionals and teams for their contributions throughout the year.

Recognition can be formal or informal. Some agencies choose structured recognition programs, while others focus on simple acknowledgements and appreciation.

Regardless of the format, the goal is the same: helping people feel valued for the work they do.

🎉 Team-Building Activities

Some agencies focus less on individual recognition and more on creating opportunities for team connection.

This can be particularly enjoyable in environments where workloads are heavy and opportunities to connect as a group are limited. Even small moments of appreciation can help strengthen morale and reinforce a sense of teamwork.

🍩 Food and Treats

Food is one of the simplest (and most popular!) ways agencies celebrate National Forensic Science Week.

Whether it’s breakfast, lunch, snacks, desserts, or a potluck, sharing food creates opportunities for people to gather, connect, and celebrate together.

📸 Social Media and Agency Visibility

National Forensic Science Week can also serve as an opportunity to increase awareness of the work forensic professionals perform.

Many agencies collaborate with their public relations team to highlight forensic personnel through social media, newsletters, websites, and internal communications.

These efforts help educate both agency personnel and the public while also recognizing the people behind the work.

👨‍🏫 Community Outreach and Public Education

Some agencies choose to focus on outreach activities that introduce forensic science to students, community members, or agency stakeholders.

These efforts can help increase understanding of the profession while also generating interest in forensic science careers.

Real Examples of How Agencies Celebrate National Forensic Science Week

One of the easiest ways to start planning National Forensic Science Week is to see what other agencies have done. If you’ve spent any time in forensic Facebook groups around National Forensic Science Week, you’ve probably seen people asking:

“What is everyone doing this year?”

The goal isn’t to copy another agency’s celebration exactly. It’s to gather inspiration and identify ideas that could work for your team, budget, and staffing realities.

While every agency is different, here are several common approaches:

Agency Spotlight Posts

Many agencies use National Forensic Science Week to highlight individual team members, showcase different forensic disciplines, or introduce the public to the people behind the work.

Examples:

  • Employee spotlight series
  • “Meet the Team” campaigns
  • Day-in-the-life features
  • Forensic career spotlights

Behind-the-Scenes Videos

Some agencies create short videos showing:

  • Crime scene processing equipment
  • Laboratory operations
  • Digital forensics workspaces
  • Interviews with forensic personnel

These videos help educate the public while also recognizing the expertise of forensic professionals.

Leadership Recognition

Some agencies share recognition messages from:

  • Chiefs
  • Sheriffs
  • Laboratory Directors
  • Command Staff

Public acknowledgement from leadership can go a long way toward making employees feel valued.

Team Celebrations

Celebrations can range from simple to elaborate.

Examples might include:

  • Team lunches
  • Potlucks
  • Awards ceremonies
  • Team outings
  • Recognition breakfasts

What matters most isn’t the size of the event—it’s creating an opportunity to recognize and appreciate the people behind the work.

Community Outreach Events

Some agencies use National Forensic Science Week to connect with the public through:

  • School presentations
  • Citizen academies
  • Community events
  • Laboratory tours
  • Demonstrations

These activities help increase awareness of forensic science careers and services.

Start With a Plan, Not an Activity

When people begin planning National Forensic Science Week, they often start by asking:

“What should we do?”

But there is a better question to ask first:

“What kind of recognition do we want to create?”

So before choosing activities, consider what success would look like for your team.

Are you trying to:

  • Improve morale?
  • Recognize individual employees?
  • Increase visibility within the agency?
  • Strengthen team connection?
  • Educate the public about forensic science?

Once you identify your primary goal, choosing activities becomes much easier so you’re not jumping from one idea to another and end up feeling overwhelmed.
