After Death: Post-Mortem Changes and Estimating the Time Since Death

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This webinar provides a comprehensive introduction to the physico-chemical changes that occur in the human body following death, and the methods used to estimate the post-mortem interval (PMI) in forensic and medicolegal contexts.
 
Beginning with core terminology and the sequence of early post-mortem changes, students are guided through the environmental and individual factors that modify each, before exploring the late post-mortem period and the processes of putrefaction, mummification, adipocere formation, and skeletonization.  
 
The webinar also provides an overview of additional methods including the Henssge Nomogram for body cooling, vitreous humour chemistry, and stomach content analysis.
 
By the end of this session, students will be able to: describe the major post-mortem changes and their forensic significance; apply PMI estimation methods appropriate to given scenarios; critically evaluate the strengths and limitations of entomological, biochemical, and physical evidence in time of death estimation.
