This month it’s all about the ladies – something we know a little something about! We’ve talked about our experiences as female supervisors as a whole on this month’s podcast episode. Now, let’s look at how you can get a promotion as a female in forensics. There are always several strategies you can employ to increase your chances of getting promoted and really a lot of these aren’t female-specific. However, we have a couple that will make a difference for our female forensics. Here are our tips to help you navigate getting promoted as a female in forensics.
1. Excel in Your Current Role
First and foremost, focus on excelling in your current position. Take on challenging assignments, meet deadlines, and consistently deliver high-quality work. By demonstrating your competence and dedication, you will establish yourself as a valuable asset to your team and organization.
2. Seek Out Additional Training and Education
Continuously seek opportunities for professional development. Attend workshops, conferences, and seminars related to your field. Consider pursuing advanced degrees or certifications that can enhance your knowledge and skills. By investing in your own growth, you will become a more competitive candidate for promotion.
3. Build Strong Relationships
Networking is crucial in any industry, and forensics is no exception. Cultivate relationships with colleagues, supervisors, and mentors who can provide guidance and support. Participate in professional organizations and engage in conversations with others in your field. These connections can open doors to new opportunities and help you gain visibility within the industry. Become recognizable for the right reasons.
4. Avoid the Drama Triangle
In our experience, females get way too caught up in the drama. Especially since, right now, forensic units are predominantly female. Best way to be in it is to avoid it… however… if you often find yourself caught in the “drama triangle” (whether that be the victim, rescuer, or persecutor) it’s important to figure out how to get out of the triangle.
^^^^ NO!
5. Get Out of the Drama Triangle!
The first step to recovery is to admit you have a problem, right?
The same goes for getting yourself into a promotable atmosphere. If you’re constantly in that drama triangle your supervisors are going to take notice. We’ll highlight more ways to get out of the drama triangle later but to get you rolling here are our top three tips.
- Become a Teacher – Ask questions and assist with issues. Don’t take over.
- Become a Challenger – Be firm & fair and that goes for everything. Communication of boundaries is the key to success.
- Lead with Love – You have to care for your team as humans. Small problems for you may be large problems for them. If you can gain understanding and then solve it with communication from a place of love and growth then you’re going to go so far in DESTROYING that triangle.
6. Advocate for Yourself
Don’t be afraid to speak up and advocate for yourself. So many times we’ve walked onto a scene and immediately get noted as the timid nerd girl that won’t need anything. Make your needs known and run your position. This goes for your superiors AND coworkers.
Express your interest in taking on additional responsibilities or pursuing higher-level positions. Highlight your accomplishments and the value you bring to the organization. By actively promoting yourself, you increase the likelihood of being considered for promotions. I’m more likely going to put more work into someone on my team who I know wants to learn and pursue higher education.
7. Be Proactive and Flexible
Take initiative and seek out new challenges. Volunteer for projects or assignments that align with your long-term goals. Be willing to step outside of your comfort zone and adapt to changing circumstances. This does NOT mean you need to be one of the guys.
It means, demonstrating your flexibility and willingness to take on new responsibilities will demonstrate your readiness for a promotion.
8. Leave the Emotions at Home
Our jobs are hard. We are females. Like it or not we are emotional beings.
Some of us may be able to control it better than others, but it’s all a part of being a lady. So… ladies… leave the emotions at home.
Don’t get confused. You can show empathy, but you can do that without letting emotions take the reigns. As a coworker lend a kind hand to someone you know is struggling today. As a supervisor, give someone time after handling a difficult scene to recoup. Do your best to not yell at the sergeant that picked up the evidence without gloves on… you see where we are going with this.
9. Earn the Respect of Your Chain of Command
A lot of what we already listed is going to 100% help you gain the respect of your chain of command, but let’s wrap it up and highlight some key points.
If your position is anything like ours then the people above your unit are mostly sworn males. So what did we learn? You gotta give respect to get it.
Always assume your COC is more well-connected than you know. Developing a cordial relationship with them will help your career and your unit:
- Focus on traits your boss has that are admirable – mindset matters my friends
- Clarify their expectations of you
- Find a mentor or coach
Regularly seek feedback from your supervisors and colleagues. Actively listen to their input and use it as an opportunity for growth. Address any areas for improvement and demonstrate your commitment to professional development. By continuously learning and growing, you will position yourself as a strong candidate for advancement.
Remember, as females we have to deal with different battles than our male counterparts. By focusing on your skills, knowledge, and relationships, you can increase your chances of success in the field of forensics. Stay determined, persevere, and continue to strive for excellence. You got this girl!
